About the Art(ist)

Karl Hoffmann's (b. 1995, Auckland, New Zealand) artistic journey is a deeply personal exploration of the tension between chaos and order, themes that have shaped both his life and his work. Without formal education in fine art, he has developed an instinctive approach that embraces unpredictability, leading to the concept of Rational Chaoticism—a guiding philosophy that informs his creative process.

Working from his loft studio, Karl engages in an intimate space filled with both traditional tools and unconventional materials. His creative process begins with chaotic, instinctual gestures—whether it's a scribble, a splash of color, or an abstract collage. From these spontaneous actions, he imposes structure, balancing the initial disorder with carefully considered composition, always seeking to find meaning in the unpredictable.

Rational Chaoticism lies at the core of Karl's artistic philosophy. It embodies his belief that true creativity emerges from the interplay between opposing forces—order and disorder, control and surrender. This philosophy also informs his exploration of the preconscious, unconscious, and conscious states of thought, which manifest in the layered complexity of his works.

A recurring theme in Karl's art is myth and symbolism, particularly surrounding emotion and the human condition. This theme resonates with Karl's own artistic journey of breaking free from convention. In works like The Adoration of Lilith, he blends mythological imagery with abstract forms, using formal composition and chaotic experimentation to craft narratives that feel both timeless and personal.
